How does the Debt Simplification algorithm work?

SplitMonX implements a two-stage settlement algorithm. First, it performs direct pairwise netting (if Alex owes Bob $20 and Bob owes Alex $5, Alex simply owes Bob $15). Second, it runs a Greedy Min-Cash-Flow bipartite graph reduction. It calculates each person's exact net balance (credits minus debts), sorts members from maximum debtor to maximum creditor, and matches them iteratively until all debts are cleared. Technical note: The algorithm guarantees mathematical zero-sum invariant: the sum of all participant net balances is always exactly 0. All computations use integer cents to eliminate floating-point precision drift.

Does simplifying debts change who actually paid or how much anyone is owed?

Never. Debt simplification only reduces the number of physical money transfers needed to clear the balance sheet. Each person's total net balance remains 100% identical down to the exact cent. A person who is net +$40 will still receive exactly $40, and a person who is net -$25 will still pay exactly $25.

The app stores pending operations in a persistent FIFO (First-In, First-Out) queue backed by SharedPreferences, alongside Firestore's 100MB LRU disk cache. When our connectivity listener detects an active internet connection, it automatically replays queued mutations with exponential backoff and idempotency tokens, guaranteeing no duplicates. Technical note: Supported offline actions: addExpense, editExpense, deleteExpense, createGroup, settleDebt, and direct chat messages.

No. SplitMonX uses Google ML Kit's Latin script text recognition running directly on your mobile device. Your camera feed or receipt photo is parsed locally, and the raw image is not uploaded to third-party ad networks or remote OCR servers.

Absolutely. The scanner presents an immediate verification sheet showing the parsed title, detected total amount, date, and suggested category. You can adjust any field or reallocate itemized amounts before confirming the expense.

How does SplitMonX handle account deletion?

SplitMonX features a fair 30-day grace period for account deletion. When you request deletion in the app, your account is immediately deactivated and signed out. If you change your mind, simply log back in within 30 days to cancel deletion. If 30 days pass without login, a scheduled Cloud Function permanently wipes your personal data, avatar files, and friend links.

Who can see the expenses in my group?

Only authenticated members who have been explicitly added to the group roster can read or write expenses in that group. Our backend security rules reject all read and write queries from any user not listed in the group's active participants list.

Does SplitMonX support E2EE (End-to-End Encryption) for group chats?

Accepted Answer

No, and we are transparent about this: SplitMonX group and direct chats use client-side text obfuscation and secure TLS in-transit encryption with strict Firestore security rules. It is designed for group collaboration, not end-to-end encrypted secret messaging (such as Signal).
